What Are the Available Treatments for Autism, and Which One Is Right For You and Your Family?
Your child has been diagnosed with autism. To say that you are feeling completely overwhelmed, scared to death, saddened beyond reason and completely helpless – or just numb – are probably all understatements. But in the end, the only thing that matters is getting help for your child and keeping you and your family functioning well as a unit. The fact that you’ve gotten this far is tremendous. Autism is a very complex condition, and identifying and diagnosing autism is not an easy thing to do. You’ve crossed that awful bridge of thinking something might be wrong, waiting (for what seemed to be an eternity) to get a diagnosis, maybe getting a second or third opinion, getting confirmation from your doctor. Now you know what you’re dealing with and it’s time to get your child the help they need.
But as confusing as identifying autism, diagnosing autism and dealing with autism is – finding the right treatment can be equally confusing. The fact is, there are literally thousands of autism and autism spectrum disorder treatment methods out there, many of which don’t work, aren’t proven, or could actually harm your child. There are also many great autism treatments that are helping thousands of children every day lead full and wonderful lives.
One thing you need to know up front is that treatment for autism is a very intensive and comprehensive undertaking that takes a very large time commitment and that involves not only the child with autism, but their entire family and team of professionals as well. Some autism treatment programs may take place in the child’s home and some autism treatment plans need to take place in a specialized center, classroom or preschool.
Another important thing to know is that there is no one autism treatment program that works 100% for all children. But the reality and complexity of autism treatment is as complicated as autism itself. Many times, what works for one autistic child won’t work for another. Also common is that an autism treatment program that works for a child could be come ineffective for that child over time. Most families do use one type of treatment that best meets their individualized needs, the needs of their child and their parenting style.
This website, www.koegelautism.com, and The Koegel Autism Research & Training Center, are focused on one proven method of autism and ASD treatment: Pivotal Response Treatment®, or PRT®. PRT® is also commonly referred to as Pivotal Response Training®, Pivotal Response Teaching®, Pivotal Response Therapy, Pivotal Response Intervention and Pivotal Response Optimization. Drs. Lynn and Robert Koegel are the founders of PRT® for autism and ASD. This website, and the Koegel autism treatment center in Santa Barbara, California will give you all the information you need to know about PRT® as an effective treatment for autism. PRT® is one of a very select few autism treatment methods that is all of the following:
- Scientifically documented
Although we’re very biased towards PRT® as the best way to treat autism and ASD, there are other autism treatment methods that are well respected and widely used. Each family should find the right autism treatment choice for them. To do that, you’ll need to investigate the claims of each treatment program so that you can fully understand the benefits and risks of each. Of the thousands of autism treatment options, Autism Speaks, the world’s largest autism advocacy organization lists only nine autism treatment options within their website. Our recommendation would be to focus on learning more about the nine listed:
- Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
- Pivotal Response Therapy (PRT®)
- Relationship Development Intervention (RDI)
- Training and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH)
- Social Communication/Emotional Regulation/Transaction Support (SCERTS)
- Treatment for Biological & Medical Conditions Associated with Autism
Once your child has been diagnosed with autism or ASD, getting started on the right treatment for you, your child and your family is the most important next step. www.koegelautsim and The Koegel Autism Research & Training Center has been helping children with autism and their families for decades.
